Dates for your diary to mark the launch of CAFOD’s new campaign: One Climate One World

In the communities where we work, we see that climate change is pushing people deeper into poverty, hitting hardest those who are already most vulnerable. It’s hard to think of something that won’t be affected by climate change, from animals and food, to the nature that surrounds us and even our families. Climate change threatens everything we love, and all that you’ve helped us to achieve in the fight against poverty. That’s why we’re calling on politicians to take action on climate change.

Join us and be part of a worldwide climate movement.

CAFOD North West Campaign Launch
When: Saturday 20 September 2014, 2-5pm
Where: Quaker Friends’ Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester, M2 5NS

We are inviting CAFOD supporters from the Diocese of Leeds to join with our friends from the dioceses of Shrewsbury, Liverpool, Lancaster and Salford in Manchester to mark the launch of the climate campaign. The event takes place on the eve of the Labour Party Conference in Manchester and on the day of the National Women’s Conference – to which the women members of the Labour Party are invited to attend before Annual Conference opens. Taking advantage of this, we have invited a couple of MPs along to our launch. We’ll be able to confirm their attendance nearer the time. We are pleased that Bishop Terence Brain of Salford Diocese will join us.
The programme for the afternoon includes input from members of CAFOD’s Campaign Team, Eilidh Macpherson and Maria Elena Arana, as well as from Sarah Wykes our Senior Analyst on Climate Change and Energy. There’ll be an opportunity for a community action and photo with the Bishop and the MPs and time for reflection and questions too.

At the end of the day, there is the option to go to Mass at The Hidden Gem (St Mary’s), a beautiful small Catholic Church, minutes away from our meeting place. Mass starts at 5.15pm.

We will consider organising transport to Manchester based on the number of people attending. Please register your attendance through the CAFOD website here. Alternatively you could let us know at the CAFOD Leeds office, tel: 0113 275 9302 or email leeds@cafod.org.uk

Meet CAFOD partners at CAFOD Leeds Campaign Launch
When: Wednesday 16th October 2014, 1-3pm
Where: Leeds Trinity University, Brownberrie Ln, Horsforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS18 5HD

New Picture

We have partnered with one of the leading Catholic academic institutions in the country to launch the One World One Climate campaign in the Diocese of Leeds. On the day we will be running different activities to inspire people to take action in solidarity with the communities where climate change is pushing people deeper into poverty. We are delighted to welcome CAFOD partners from CEAS from Peru (the agency of the Peruvian Bishops conference) to the event and you will have the opportunity to meet them on the day.

Between 1-2pm we will hear from three speakers who will articulate the scale of the issue and the importance and urgency of taking action. Our partners from CEAS will reveal the reality of climate change on communities in Peru and explain what CAFOD is doing to support those communities. Dr Anne-Marie Mealey, (Senior Lecturer, Theology at Leeds Trinity University) will interpret our moral and spiritual responsibility for taking action on this issue and Prof Andy Challinor (Professor of Climate Impacts, Leeds University), will examine the scientific evidence for the climate change.

Further details of the activities during the day will be revealed nearer the time and there will be a service of prayer and reflection in the university chapel at the end of the day.

Huddersfield businessman donates 100 suits to raise money for people living in poverty

Suits 1

A Huddersfield businessman has donated 100 quality tailored suits to charity to help raise money for some of the world’s poorest people.

Chris Antich, owner of Antich and Sons (Huddersfield) Ltd, Station Road, Bradley Junction, decided to donate the suits to CAFOD following a stock clearout. His aim was to help those abroad and those here who need a good quality suit.

Chris said: “Rather than have somebody take them we thought we’d let CAFOD have them. It was a no-brainer. I feel fortunate that we’re in a position to give and we get great pleasure out of being able to do so.”

Speaking about the impact he wants the sale to have, Chris said: “We are delighted to give these suits to such a good cause as CAFOD. Antich hope that all the recipients will prosper and have a better chance at succeeding. I hope that it helps people who need a good suit for an occasion or an interview.”

All of the suits and separates are brand new and come in a variety of styles for men and women. They usually retail at £100-110, but will be available to purchase for a fraction of the original cost.

The suit sale was held in Crosby, Liverpool and raised £400 however the remaining suits will be sold through the volunteer run CAFOD shop in Liverpool.

Proceeds from the sale will go towards CAFOD’s work to help transform the lives of those living in poverty around the world.

Ben Oldham, CAFOD manager for the Diocese of Leeds, said: “We’d like to thank Chris for his support and generosity. The money raised from the sale will make a real difference to those living in poverty.”

Well done and thank you Steve!

Steve Woodhead during the London Marathon 2014

Steve Woodhead during the London Marathon 2014

Last Sunday Steve Woodhead from Hebden Bridge ran the London Marathon in support of CAFOD. From everyone at CAFOD we’d like to say a huge thank you and congratulate you on a fantastic achievement.

Despite some unconventional training methods, centred in a pool rather than on tarmac, Steve overcame his injury to finish the iconic course in 4hrs 40 mins.

Steve has raised pledges for £2,000 thanks to the support of colleagues and especially the parishioners at the Good Shepherd Mytholmroyd and Sacred Heart Sowerby Bridge. This money will be used to support people living in poor communities around the world to help raise them from poverty.

When asked how the race went he said “I loved the race, even though it hurt! The atmosphere was great throughout the whole day”.

If you feel inspired by Steve and would like to challenge yourself whilst raising awareness of CAFOD’s work then get in touch with Leeds office to find out about the Leeds 10k on 20th July 2014.
